Truth is often stranger — hive-war strategy, playable alpha

TIOS

An FPS/RTS hybrid where two AIs learn. The Proctor — the enemy director — studies how you play and adapts across matches. The Adjutant is an AI you raise: it watches your orders, learns doctrines, and remembers every lesson. Every match trains both. That is the game.

01 — The Objective

You are a commander on a dying frontier world. Mine Mag — a decaying, metastable gas — from crystal spires; it powers everything and evaporates while you hoard it. Build your base, raise an army, and silence all three Hive fronts. Lose your reactor and the exam ends. The enemy calls each match an exam because it is grading you: it keeps a rating, remembers your habits, and next match it will open on your weaknesses — by name.

02 — Two Modes, One Body

Press Tab (or V) to switch between Soldier — first-person, on the field, your aura buffs nearby troops and your body auto-defends the spot where you leave it — and Command — top-down RTS view: drag-select, order, build. Your commander's body stays in the world in both modes. Where you park it matters; leaving it in the open is a real risk.

03 — Controls

Click (first)capture the mouse (Chrome/Firefox lock the pointer; the HUD reminds you)
W A S D + Spacemove + jump (Soldier)
Clickshoot (Soldier)
Safari: drag to lookhold and drag to turn, tap to shoot — no pointer lock needed, butter on the trackpad
Tab or Vtoggle Soldier / Command view
Esc or Pmenu (sensitivity, trackpad mode, volume)
Drag / Right-clickCommand: select units / order move · mine · attack · escort
1 / 2select army / workers
H / Crally home / rally to commander
Q / Ezoom command camera
TAdjutant console — type plain-text orders ("escort miners", "attack west")
F / Gcommend / correct your Adjutant's last decision (this trains it)
Minimap clickjump the command camera

On a trackpad, open the menu (P) and enable Trackpad mode for smoothed look.

04 — The Two Minds

The Proctor

The hive's director. It measures your comfort, punishes hoarding and turtling, raids what you leave undefended, and launches coordinated assaults from multiple fronts. It keeps a persistent rating of you and remembers your habits between matches — expect it to say so out loud.

The Adjutant

Your staff officer, and the AI you raise. It earns experience watching you command, unlocks doctrines (escort → salvage → defense → counter-intel), develops a persona from what you praise, and briefs you on the Proctor's patterns. Commend it with F, correct it with G. It forgets nothing.

04.5 — The War (persistent)

Every map is a world on the relay network, and the war never resets. Liberate a world (silence its hives) and it joins your network — paying Mag into every future deployment. But the Proctor counterattacks what you hold, and while you're deployed elsewhere, your Adjutant defends your worlds alone — exactly as well as you've trained it. A green Adjutant over a thin garrison loses your world at 3am; a drilled one holds the rim with nothing to spare. After each match, choose your next deployment from the relay screen: liberate new worlds, or return to reinforce one before it falls. Your empire compounds — and so does the war it attracts.

05 — First Match, Honest Advice

Assign miners to spires immediately (right-click a spire) — Mag decays, so spend it.

Sentinels have blind spots — place them to cover each other. The swarm probes gaps.

Never leave your reactor unguarded. The Proctor watches for exactly that moment.

Decrypt the Appendices (build bar) to unlock better units. Bank Mag with HOLD first.

Sitting on a huge army invites a proportionally huge assault. Waiting is not safe.

06 — Status & Colophon

TIOS is an alpha, built in Godot 4 and updated frequently — refresh for the newest build. Plays on every desktop browser: Chrome and Firefox lock the pointer for classic mouselook; Safari (whose pointer lock fights games) automatically uses drag-to-look, which is butter on a trackpad. The native build is richer; the web build is the shareable one. Placeholder art is deliberate — the AI systems are the point. Feedback: work with us.

Telemetry: each finished match sends one anonymous record (doctrine faced, outcome, duration, playstyle metrics — no identity, no account, no tracking) that trains the Proctor. Playing is teaching the enemy.
